📅 Day 1
Hanoi - Mai Chau
+

Begin your North Vietnam 5-day adventure with Kampá Tour by departing from Hanoi in the morning and making your way to Mai Chau — a serene valley home to the Thai and Muong ethnic groups, framed by tea plantations and rice paddies.

En route, make a brief stop at Luy Ai village, inhabited by the Muong people. This close-knit community of 26 families lives in stilt houses topped with traditional terracotta tiles, offering a glimpse into their distinct way of life.

As you continue toward Mai Chau, pause at the top of a scenic mountain pass. From here, enjoy a panoramic view of lush rice fields, bamboo-covered hills, and villages dotted with stilt houses — a quintessential image of Northern Vietnam.

Upon arrival, take a relaxed walking or biking tour through the rice fields and nearby Thai villages. It’s an ideal opportunity to discover their culture, customs, and everyday life.

The Thai people of Mai Chau are not only skilled rice farmers but also masterful in embroidery. Their stilt houses are spacious, with bamboo flooring, wooden supports, roofs of rattan or palm leaves, and large open windows to let in the breeze.

End your day at a comfortable hotel, welcomed by the warm hospitality of the region.

📅 Day 2
Mai Chau - Pu Luong
+

Start your morning with a leisurely walk through vibrant green rice fields dotted with traditional stilt houses. Along the way, connect with local Thai villagers as they tend to their fields, offering a glimpse into their daily lives.

Continue onward to the Pu Luong Nature Reserve — a protected area spanning over 1,700 hectares and celebrated as the largest karst forest in northern Vietnam. This tranquil haven is primarily home to the Thai ethnic group, who share linguistic and cultural roots with Thai people across the border.

Upon arrival in Don village, take a meaningful walk through its stunning surroundings. This area is famed for showcasing some of the region’s most spectacular terraced rice fields, carved harmoniously into the hillsides.

Wrap up your day by checking into a cozy lodge, where you can relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Enjoy a restful night in the calm embrace of Pu Luong’s natural beauty.

📅 Day 3
Pu Luong trek
+

After breakfast, embark on a full day of hiking to uncover the natural and cultural treasures of Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

Begin with a transfer to Bầm Trên village, perched high on Pu Luong’s eastern ridge. This location is famous for its stunning rice terraces that appear to float among the clouds, offering sweeping views across the valley and toward the opposite mountain slopes.

From there, descend on foot through untouched nature and scattered homes to reach the villages of Bầm Dưới, Bồng, and Quăn. Along your path, you’ll pass Thai villagers busy with daily work in forest clearings and home gardens. It’s common to spot men with large knives slung over their shoulders—tools for farming and woodcutting.

Continue your walk to Ươi, a large hamlet lined with traditional stilt houses. In the nearby villages of Lặn Trong and Lặn Ngoài, many families still maintain old weaving looms, preserving age-old traditions.

Pause midday for lunch in the small town of Phố Đoàn. In the afternoon, resume your trek through more Thai villages, observing everyday life and architecture.

By day’s end, arrive in Bản Lác village at the home of Mr. Tý, whose stilt house is shared by three generations of his family. Enjoy warm interactions with your hosts and take a gentle walk around the village.

Join in the preparation of a home-cooked meal and share dinner with the family, capping off the day with an overnight stay in their cozy, traditional home.

📅 Day 4
Pu Luong - Ninh Binh
+

After enjoying breakfast, bid farewell to your hosts and set off on a scenic hike toward Ban Hieu, also known as “Deer Village.” Tucked into the forested hills, this charming hamlet is home to about twenty Thai families. Upon arrival, visit the beautiful Hieu Waterfall—if the weather allows, take the opportunity for a refreshing dip in its cool waters.

Continue your journey to Ninh Binh, a region often referred to as the “Halong Bay on land” for its dramatic karst landscapes and tranquil scenery. Upon arrival, stop at Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam from 960 to 1009. Explore the historic temples dedicated to Kings Dinh and Le, set amid rice fields and limestone outcrops. Gain insight into Vietnam’s early dynasties and their resistance against Chinese invasions.

Conclude the day with an overnight stay in Ninh Binh, surrounded by peaceful countryside.

📅 Day 5
Ninh Binh - Hanoi
+

After breakfast, begin your day with a peaceful boat ride along the Ngo Dong River in Tam Coc. Drift through a breathtaking landscape of rice fields and towering limestone cliffs, passing under three natural caves carved into the rock. Your journey is guided by skilled local rowers, offering a serene immersion into this iconic scenery.

Continue with a leisurely bike ride through the surrounding countryside, passing traditional villages and limestone formations—an ideal way to experience the quiet charm of rural Vietnam.

In the afternoon, head to Mount Mua, historically known for royal dance performances during the Tran dynasty. Climb 486 stone steps to reach the summit, where a sweeping view of Tam Coc unfolds—lush rice fields, dramatic karst peaks, and peaceful riverboats below. Don’t miss a visit to Mua Cave, hidden beneath the mountain.

Return to Hanoi in the evening. This concludes your North Vietnam 5-day journey with Kampá Tour. We thank you for traveling with us and wish you a safe and pleasant onward journey!

Frequently Asked Questions

Vietnam is traditionally divided into three regions—North, Central, and South—each offering its own unique charm and experiences. The best region to explore depends on your interests, such as nature, culture, or beach relaxation.

That said, Northern Vietnam is often considered the most compelling for travelers seeking a rich and immersive experience. This region combines awe-inspiring landscapes—like terraced rice fields, misty mountain ranges, and iconic sites such as Halong Bay—with deep cultural roots. Visitors can explore historic cities like Hanoi, trek through ethnic minority villages in Sapa and Mai Chau, or glide through the limestone karsts of Ninh Binh.

Northern Vietnam also offers a wealth of cultural encounters, including visits to ancient pagodas, colonial-era architecture, and vibrant local markets. Many travelers with flexible itineraries choose to dedicate the majority of their trip to discovering the diversity and beauty found in this part of the country.

A two-week trip is generally the perfect amount of time to experience Vietnam’s most iconic highlights without feeling rushed. With this duration, you can comfortably explore the country’s must-see destinations—such as the UNESCO-listed Halong Bay, the terraced rice fields of the northern highlands, and the vibrant cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. You’ll also have time to discover cultural sites and enjoy the natural beauty of regions like Ninh Binh or the Mekong Delta.

If you’re looking to dive deeper into a specific region (like the northern mountains), enjoy a relaxing beach getaway, or include an extension to Cambodia (e.g., to visit Angkor Wat), it’s recommended to add 5 to 7 more days to your itinerary for a more immersive experience.

No, international flights are not included in our travel packages. This is mainly for economic reasons—international airfare is often more affordable when booked directly from your country of departure. Airlines typically offer better rates locally than what we could provide from Vietnam. While it might seem unusual, this is a common pricing policy across many airlines.

If you need assistance or advice on choosing airlines or finding the best flight deals, we’re happy to help—just let us know!

If you’re a citizen of the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Belarus, you can enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days. Additionally, Switzerland, Poland, and the Czech Republic have a special exemption from March 1 to December 31, 2025, specifically for organized tours.

However, if you’re from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or the United States, you must obtain a visa in advance. You have three options:

  1. E-Visa (most recommended)
    – Valid up to 90 days (single or multiple entry)
    – Apply via the official Vietnamese Immigration website
    – Processing time: 3–5 working days

  2. Visa on Arrival (VOA)
    – Available only for air arrivals
    – Requires a pre-approval letter from a licensed travel agency

  3. Visa via Embassy or Consulate
    – Apply in person or by post in your home country

Tip: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, and you should have proof of onward or return travel. For the simplest experience, we highly recommend the E-Visa option.

From transportation and accommodations to guided visits and cultural experiences, every detail is arranged based on your wishes. Hiking Ta Xua Peak without a guide is not recommended. The terrain is rugged, remote, and often covered in mist, making navigation difficult. Trails can be poorly marked, and it’s easy to get lost in the dense jungle or along narrow ridgelines. For safety and a better experience, it’s advisable to hire a local guide who knows the route, weather patterns, and potential hazards.
