Your guide will pick you up early in the morning from your accommodation to begin your 7-day Northern Vietnam trekking adventure. Depart from Hanoi and head toward Ha Giang, making photo stops along the way to capture the stunning scenery of the northeast—rolling hills, dramatic mountains, and lush landscapes.

Upon arrival in Ha Giang, a breathtaking plateau in Vietnam’s far north, you’ll experience what many describe as a true haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Settle in, enjoy some leisure time, and explore the tranquil surroundings near your hotel. Overnight in Ha Giang.

📅 Day 2
Ha Giang - Quan Ba - Dong Van
+

Begin your day by bidding farewell to your hosts as the journey continues toward the awe-inspiring karst plateau of Dong Van, one of Asia’s largest geological parks. Today’s route winds through towering limestone massifs, offering dramatic views and an unforgettable immersion in Northern Vietnam’s rugged beauty—this stretch is undoubtedly one of the most scenic of the entire trip.

Along the way, enjoy several cultural and photographic stops:

  • Lung Tam Village: Visit a traditional Hmong linen workshop run by local women. Discover centuries-old weaving techniques and browse handmade items such as clothing, bags, and accessories, all reflecting the vibrant ethnic traditions of the region.

  • Pho Cao: Wander through a quaint hamlet dotted with old clay houses topped with weathered tile roofs—an authentic glimpse into local architecture.

  • Sa Phin: Explore the historic Vuong Palace, former residence of Vuong Chinh Duc—the “Hmong King.” This unique structure combines Chinese and indigenous design elements and stands as a symbol of the region’s cultural past.

Arrive in Dong Van by late afternoon, check in to your hotel, and enjoy a relaxing evening at your own pace. Overnight in Dong Van.

📅 Day 3
Dong Van trekking
+

Spend the day trekking through the remarkable karst plateau of Dong Van, rising 1,300 meters above sea level. Spanning over 600 km², this UNESCO Global Geopark is one of Asia’s most impressive geological wonders and home to the Hmong people—an ethnic group with ancestral roots in the southern Himalayas.

Today’s hike leads you well off the beaten path, crossing vast limestone formations that create a dramatic and surreal landscape. Descend into remote valleys carved by time, where steep slopes are cultivated by the Hmong with corn and barley, and cattle roam the hillsides. You’ll witness the everyday life of these mountain communities, where women skillfully grow and weave linen into colorful, handcrafted garments.

As you follow trails skirting the Sino-Vietnamese border, catch distant views of the Yunnan mountain ranges stretching along the horizon.

Before returning, stop at Thien Huong, a peaceful Tay village nestled deep in a valley. This charming hamlet still preserves traditional mudbrick houses with Yin-Yang tiled roofs. Stroll through the village lanes shaded by ancient banyan trees—some over a hundred years old—offering a timeless atmosphere.

Return to your hotel in Dong Van by late afternoon. Overnight in Dong Van.

📅 Day 4
Dong Van – Nho Que - Meo Vac – Bao Lac
+

After breakfast, set off toward Ngai Lau along the legendary Route 4C, which hugs the cliffs of the spectacular Ma Pi Leng Pass—a dizzying stretch once considered impassable due to its sheer limestone walls. The road offers awe-inspiring panoramic views of deep gorges and jagged peaks.

Leave the main road behind and follow narrow zigzagging trails down into the heart of the valley. As you descend, the landscape reveals a patchwork of karst peaks, valleys, and remote ethnic hamlets. Stop in Ngai Lau, a picturesque Hmong village where traditional wooden houses nestle into the hillside.

Continue trekking to Ta Lang, a peaceful riverside stop where you’ll board a small boat for a scenic journey along the emerald waters of the Nho Que River. Originating in Yunnan, China, this river flows dramatically through a deep canyon between towering limestone cliffs—a truly breathtaking natural wonder.

After the boat trip, journey onward to Bao Lac, a tranquil town on the Gam River. From there, ascend to Khuoi Khon, a hilltop village renowned for its terraced fields and home to the Black Lolo ethnic group—famously featured in the French program “Rendez-vous en terre inconnue.”

Settle into a local homestay for a warm, authentic evening with a Lolo family. Overnight in Khuoi Khon.

📅 Day 5
Bao Lac- Quang Uyen
+

After breakfast, depart for Quang Uyen, a quiet rural district nestled near the Chinese border on the road to Cao Bang. Upon arrival, set out on a leisurely walk to explore nearby traditional craft villages inhabited by the Tay and Nung ethnic minorities.

These communities are known for their distinctive stilt houses with Yin-Yang tiled roofs and a lifestyle that remains largely untouched by modern development. Begin with a visit to Phia Chang Village, where generations of villagers have crafted high-quality knives from special steel. Continue to Phia Thap Village, famous for its traditional incense making, a fragrant craft still practiced with age-old techniques.

Quang Uyen is unique in that the Tay and Nung people here have preserved a wide range of handicrafts rarely seen elsewhere in Vietnam’s northern highlands.

In the evening, settle into the home of a Tay family in the incense village. Enjoy a homemade dinner and spend the night in their charming wooden stilt house, offering an authentic glimpse into local life.

📅 Day 6
Quang Uyen - Ban Gioc - Cao Bang
+

Depart for the easternmost part of northern Vietnam, near the Chinese border, crossing rolling hills and lush, green sugarloaf-shaped mountains.

Upon arrival in Trung Khanh, visit the spectacular Ban Gioc Falls, considered one of Asia’s most stunning waterfalls and ranked as the world’s fourth longest after Iguaçu, Niagara, and Victoria Falls. Depending on the season, you may have the chance to swim in its refreshing waters.

Next, proceed to Dam Thuy to explore the impressive Nguom Ngao Cave, famous for its ancient stalagmites and stalactites formed over centuries.

Return to Cao Bang for an overnight stay at your hotel.

📅 Day 7
Cao Bang - Hanoi
+

After breakfast, travel back to Hanoi by road.

Arrive in the city late afternoon, and enjoy a relaxing foot massage at a local spa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Based on our extensive experience, we suggest the following periods for hiking in Vietnam:

Northern Vietnam: The ideal hiking months are October, November, and December. During this time, the weather is cool and dry, trails are less muddy, and visibility is generally clear.
Central Vietnam: We recommend hiking in spring, specifically March, April, and May. The weather is usually sunny without excessive heat, and any rain showers are typically short-lived.
Southern Vietnam: The south remains warm throughout the year, but the best time to hike is during the cooler winter months of December and January, when temperatures are more comfortable.

Following these recommendations will help you enjoy a pleasant and rewarding hiking experience throughout Vietnam.

Hiking Ta Xua Peak without a guide is not advisable because of the difficult and rugged terrain. The dense jungle makes it easy to lose your way.

Some of the top hiking spots in Vietnam’s North and Northwest include Ky Quan San and Lao Than in Lao Cai, Pha Luong and Ta Xua Peak in Son La, and Lung Cung in Yen Bai. These locations feature breathtaking scenery and challenging trails. It is strongly recommended to hire a private guide or porter from reputable companies like Casa Vietnam Travel, which offers experienced English-speaking guides. The terrain in these areas is very wild and unfamiliar, making it difficult and risky to navigate without a guide due to the possibility of getting lost in the jungle.

If you are from the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Belarus, you do not need a visa to enter Vietnam for stays up to 45 days. Specifically, Switzerland, Poland, and the Czech Republic have a special exemption for organized tours from March 1 to December 31, 2025.

However, citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States are NOT exempt and must obtain a visa before arriving in Vietnam. You have three options:

  1. E-Visa (valid up to 90 days, single or multiple entry) — Apply online through the Vietnamese Immigration website; processing usually takes 3–5 days.

  2. Visa on Arrival (VOA) — Available only for travelers arriving by air and requires a pre-approval letter from an authorized travel agency.

  3. Visa via Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate — Apply in person or by mail in your home country.

For the easiest process, we strongly recommend the E-Visa. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months and have proof of onward travel. Contact us if you need assistance with your visa.
